Neda Birdsong, a daughter of Quanah, recorded the family account of the death of Peta Nocona, the father of Quanah:
He died of an old war wound while picking plums on the Canadian River and was buried in the Antelope Hills.
The river runs through Hemphill County. The hills are east of present-day Canadian.
The Quanah Parker Trail Arrow in Canadian is in the 800 block of North 2nd Street at the north edge of town.
