*German author Karl May wrote about the American West. His primary characters, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, roamed the Llano Estacado. Accurate or not, May’s books have given generations of Germans a vivid look at the Old West. The museum celebrates May and his writings, making it a popular stop on the itineraries of many European visitors to Texas. May continues to be a popular writer in Germany and in other parts of Europe. He himself never visited the American West.
